DATA DOMAIN JOINS THE GREEN GRID

Data Deduplication Reduces Storage Footprint, Improves Data Centre Efficiencies

Data Domain (Nasdaq: DDUP), the leading provider of deduplication storage systems for enterprise disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced that the company has joined The Green Grid. As a member of the consortium, Data Domain will help promote the adoption of energy efficient standards, processes, measurements and technologies in conjunction with the application of data deduplication technologies in data centres.

 

The Green Grid is a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centres and business computing ecosystems. The consortium’s scope includes collaboration with other industry groups and government organisations worldwide to ensure that each organisational goal is aligned with both developers and users of data centre technology.

 

“Customers everywhere are heavily impacted by the growth of data,” said Beth White, Vice President of Product Marketing for Data Domain. “In certain regions and cities, data centre power requirements are outstripping power grid capabilities to the point where some data centres are even being forced to move. Storage represents a significant portion of a data centre’s overall power drain, so data deduplication’s “green-effect” is pivotal. Data Domain technology is exceptionally green because redundant data is eliminated before it is ever stored to disk. Fewer disks mean less cooling, less power consumption and less footprint. Data Domain technology is already having a positive impact on power consumption in data centres for disk-based backup environments. Assuming optimal data deduplication compression rates, the resulting efficiencies of a storage system equipped with inline data deduplication can bring power consumption rates down into the range of 1.5 to 3.0 WATTS per usable TB.

 

Data Domain will work with other members of The Green Grid to help develop and deliver energy–efficient technologies and best practices to end users, with a particular focus on the implementation and benefits of data deduplication technology in data centre environments.
